挪威島嶼極光之旅歸來( Back from the “Norway’s Lofoten Islands” Tour)

走出父親過世的一年(2017)丁憂,今年(2018)恢復每年2趟的長途旅行攝影,首趟是在去年已規劃安排的挪威Lofoten群島極光及雪地攝影,我選擇美國有名的攝影團隊Joseph Van Os Photo Safaris” 的12人攝影團由Mr. Joseph Van Os 親自領隊

,行程內容在我2017/3/14的挪威北極島嶼探奇行前”部落格已有簡單的說明,由於行程都是經主辦單位長時間規劃修正,因此實際走行程時沒有有較大的進出,一些熱門的拍攝點大致也不會改變,但因應氣候、溫度的不同都會有差異的拍攝點或說有意想不到的驚奇,由於人數嚴格的限制使用兩台廂形車,使每個人能有足夠空間,減少拍攝以外可能造成的負荷,使大家在愉快順暢的情況下進行我們的拍攝,這是主辦單位呈現優越的地方,在攝影專業上使我印象深刻的是領導本身就是專業攝影師,因此帶領大家在拍攝時,學習到不管是地點或注意事項如行動安全、拍攝角度、畫面取景和相機設定等,使大家在此趟旅遊攝影都有實際上的收穫,事在人為這就是西方人在各方面都能超越我們的原因,在經驗中落實改正缺點且務實面對困難是成功不二的法則。

the short blog “Before the Norway’s Lofoten Islands Tour” dated 2017/3/14 described the itinerary of this tour can be found in my website, the exact itinerary was more or less the same as it, but the difference is normally according to the weather condition, we have 2 vans for the transportation, so everybody can enjoy the comfort during the tour owing to the limit of participants as 12 people, I think it is the main reason of a successful tour management, the group leader Joe is an experienced professional photographer who leads the group in multiple prospects such as safety、shooting angleimage composition and camera setting etc., I have learned a lot of information from a pro photographer, I think a better photographer should remove the mistake through the experience and deal with the severe condition aggressively.

旅程簡述此次行程含蓋的景點主要為Lofoten島的兩個地區,分別為ReineLekens,行程前4天以Reine地區為中心周遊其附近的景點,第一天由機場附近的旅館出發約4小時的車程來到入住的木屋,前方的峽灣和左邊入海處的拱橋是絕佳的拍攝景點,稍事休息驅車來到一處橋樑,開始旅程的首次夕陽拍攝,群山環繞的灣區和點綴在岸邊顏色鮮艷的木屋在寒冷的夕陽時刻透出一絲暖流,太陽西下後進入極地特有的藍色時刻(blue hours),太陽餘光經天空反射出的藍色,使大地更加冷峻, Reine地區是一個歷史悠久的典型挪威小漁村,只有約300人口主要靠捕魚為生,魚種主要是鱈魚,包括黑線鱈(haddck)、綠鱈(pollack)、黑鱈(coalfish)及比目魚(halibut)等。

在挪威極地(約北緯67~ 68)氣候變化巨大,天氣陰雨時起風下雪,同時溫度也大幅下降,而當有日照的晴天時氣溫回升風平浪靜,由於Lofoten群島的海灣地形,氣溫溫和感覺不到身處冬天北極的寒冷,拍照時也更為舒適,不過此行晴朗的天氣較多應該也是攝影團選擇一年中這個季節的原因,同時這個時候也是每年北極光出線最頻繁的時段,此趟行程拜天氣之賜能有很多機會看到北極光,我們總共有3個晚上到約6,7個地點包括岩岸、海濱、峽灣等地區,拍攝極光時畫面裡前、後景的取捨對畫面有加成的作用,極光是太陽黑子與地球大氣層離子相互碰撞產生電離作用而發出的光芒,一般是在地球南北兩端磁場較強的區域較易看到,因此稱為北極光南極光,除了極光此次行程也選擇Lofoten群島的奇特風貌為拍攝題材,整個群個地區都是岩石山脈圍繞的峽灣,包括內灣和與大西洋接壤的外灣,大大小小的島嶼間由一條條拱形橋樑和無數隧道連接是此地的特色,日初日落灑在鋸齒狀岩石山脈三角山峰上的粉紅、橘紅陽光,在覆蓋白雪的山頭呈現出迷人的色彩,另外在群島區的特別地貌是高聳的岩石海岸及深不可測的岩石峭壁懸崖,冬天的白雪覆蓋使其成為豐富的天然裝置藝術。

3天離開Reine地區行程來到Leken,此時氣候轉冷氣溫降到零度以下,對在戶外的拍攝造成一些困難尤其是手指,在深夜等待極光的時刻更是感受深刻,在入住新的木屋後再次出發去拍攝峽灣岩岸的景色,在夕陽時刻以巨大的岩石作前景和懸掛天際的陽光為背景來構圖,凸顯由慢速快門呈現的絲綢般浪花,晚間利用天氣轉晴的機會再次來到海邊拍攝在黑暗天空中跳躍的北極光,陣陣浪花沖上岸邊,慢速快門形成的柔和水面反射了不斷變化的極光圖案,天地似乎在此時融合成一體,光線強時照在四周如同白晝,隔天清晨的日出是在一片大形冰塊的峽灣,也是風景構圖的最佳前景,以較低角度的視角拍攝能突顯畫面的張力,Lofoten群島的奇特風貌的確使到訪遊客留下深刻印象及想像力,氣候變化形成其變化萬千的面貌是吸引眾多遊客的原因。

Tour itinerary The itinerary concludes 2 areas of the Lofoten Island, that are Reine and Lekens, the first 4 days we stayed in Reine and took photos in the surrounding locations, day one we started from the hotel near the airport to a log cabin area by about 4 hours drive, which is facing a fjord and the outlet to the ocean at left with an arch bridge on it, after a short rest we started our first photography activities by a short drive to a neighboring bay area, where is surrounding by the serrate rocky mountains and the log houses, the amber lighting from the fishing villages by the shore offering a warm stream feel in the bitter winter twilight, the blue hours is the feature in the polar area, which are coming from the Sun light diffusion by the cloud after Sunset, the fishing village in Reine have a population of about 300, living on the fishing, the main fish are Cod fish, the species including haddck、pollackcoalfish and halibut etc..

In Lofoten island which located in the latitude around 67゚~  68North, the weather is altered fast, when it becoming cloudy or snowing then the temperature dropped low and windy, but in the Sunny days it become warm Sunshine and no wind, thanks to the gulf stream the overall weather are mild in the winter, we were lucky to have got most mild weather during the tours, it is also the season for viewing the Aurora Borealis, we have had 3 nights to shoot the Aurora Borealis owing to the suitable weather condition, we have been in 6~7 locations including rock shorebeaches and gulf etc., that offers us many foreground selections in the image compositions, the Aurora Borealis is so called Northern light, which is the collision between the electronic stream from the Sun and the upper atmosphere of the earth, and it can be frequently seen in the polar area because of the stronger magnetic field happened, except the Aurora Borealis, there are many unique landscape in Lofoten island, such as its serrate maritime mountainsfjords and gulfs which including inner and outer gulfs, there are many arch bridges and tunnels connecting between the archipelago, the rosy pink and also pink orange Sun light covering the snow mounted peak of the serrate mountains turn out to be an attracting color during the Sun rise, the other attracting spots are also the deep rocky cliff and fierce sea waves.

The second and last section of the 3 days tour is moving to the Lekens area, we were facing the worse weather condition, temperature has dropped and windy, I have had a difficult time when shooting the Aurora Borealis in the late evening, after the new settlement in the log cabin, we moved out again for the Sunset, the large rocks along the shore are as the foreground while the leaking Sunlight as the background for my composition, the slow shutter speed making the silky waves become possible, We had one more night possible to view the Aurora Borealis in the beach, the waves roars striking the sea shore while the dancing Aurora green lighting was reflected from the sand after the sea water withdrawing, the bright sky is connecting all the way to the ground with the northern light, the Sun rise of next morning we had a shooting of the gulf with scattered ice blocks, I set the camera in a low prospect, with the ice blocks as the foreground turned the images become more impact, the landscape of Lofoten island attracts the visitors by its unique character and the unlimited faces aroused by the variable weather condition.

攝影內容此趟旅行攝影的拍攝主題是Lofoten群島的極地岩石山嶺的風景地貌和冬季出現頻繁的北極光,在拍攝山川、海浪風景時,減光鏡和漸層減光是不可或缺的,雖然很多人認為天空和地面亮暗的差異在後製時就可輕易的修正,但影像質地的優劣在按下快門時即已大致固定,以後的任何修飾是無法改變其原始的內涵只能修飾,因此拍攝時相機的完整曝光數據是決定影像品質優劣的因素,另外使用慢速快門配合腳架使相機可獲取較多的光線灰階(由亮到暗的變化),使影像的色彩、對比更加充實,增加影像的可看性。

在極光的拍攝上,首先應熟悉相機的各部份操作,才不至於在黑暗的環境下手忙腳亂,在到達拍攝地點前應先將對焦設定完成,拍攝時即不須再變動,且應將關閉鏡頭的自動對焦,快門速度的設定會影響星光的外形,如要使星光呈現點狀光點,根據地球轉動的經驗法則,拍攝地點愈靠近赤道星光移動愈快,反之在極地端則愈慢,因此根據經驗得一常數為100~1000,此常數除以鏡頭焦距(以全幅相機為準),即得到須要的快門秒數(例如此次我使用14mm鏡頭,以我們拍攝的地點(約北緯68),領隊建議使用常數“600”,因此600/14=40),在設定曝光時,可以此秒數調整ISO值,光圈則以鏡頭的最大光圈為原則。

其他如岩石、海浪及結冰海岸的攝影,有時採取低視角並使前景佔有較多畫面,再以較大景深設定向後延伸,可使整個影像呈現較大衝擊性,是不錯的構圖方式之一。

Shooting contents The serrate rocky mountains and the busy Aurora Borealis are the main photography items for this tour, the graduate neutral density and neutral density filter are the must have gears for the landscape images as my opinion, although others  state that the bright exposure in the sky can be easily adjusted in the post process, but the original image quality normally born when you push the shutter, the post process can make an image look pretty but not the quality, so the camera setting of proper exposure on site are the main factor for a good image, and the long exposure with slow shutter is the other important one for a better landscape image, the slow shutter can invite more dynamic range of the light, the camera sensor is exposed with more color and contrast contents.

As to the shooting of the Aurora Borealis, you should be very familiar with the operation of your gears, so you won’t be panic in the dark environment, it is better to set your focus distance according to the lens you use before you get to the shooting site, because you can’t use auto focus function during the shooting, the shutter speed for getting a spot light of stars in the image is according to a rule of thumb, that is a “constant” divided by the lens focal length, constant number are between “1000-100” for the location of arctic to equator, we choose “600” for our location, so my calculation is 600 divided by 14mm (prime lens), the result will be around 40 seconds, then the exposure f/stop should be the widest that lens can offer, for example f/2.8.

For the other shooting aspect such as the seascape、waves and beach etc., the lower angle composition with deep depth of field is also one of the creative idea.

行程高潮這次拍攝的高潮還是在北極光,另外一般風景攝影構圖大都採取橫幅的想法,在近來的旅遊攝影有一些改變,改以直幅來表現景深更能吸引觀賞者的目光,尤其是拍攝海浪的澎湃美景時。

The highlightsThe highlight of this photography tour is still the Aurora Borealis, also normally for landscape images, we will choose landscape mode, but sometimes the portrait mode are more compact can attract more viewers’ sight, especially in the shooting of seascape or sea waves.
