東北霧淞單頂鶴 (Shooting landscape ane wild lifes in Northern East China)

去年年底參加”香港攝影協會”年度的東北攝影團攝影活動,拍攝在橫道子河的東北虎並到中國最美的雪鄉霧淞島的樹掛(霧淞)美景,最後去向海拍攝單頂鶴。

End of last year (2015) in December, I joined HKAPA- a Hong Kong photography group to Northern East China, the itinerary were including the shooting of “tiger”、”red dot head crane” and the beautiful snow view of the Northern East China,

中國東北一直是我喜歡去造訪的地區,很多朋友無法理解為何我老是去同一個地區旅遊攝影,我想最主要的原因之一是我從小就被送去國語實驗校小學學習”國語”(現在大陸所稱的普通話),現在大陸的普通話就是我們當時所稱的”北京話”英語所謂的Mandarin,屬於中國北方的語系,尤其中國最後一個專制王朝即是來自東北說北京語的滿族,因此他們的語言造成深遠的影響一直到現在。

I am fond of visiting north China is because that the language of Mandarin they speak, which is different from the people lived here in Taiwan, I was studying the Mandarin Chinese started from my primary school, it was a kind of privilege during that dictatorship political era, so not many of the people in Taiwan can speak perfect Mandarin Chinese although the official language in Taiwan is Mandarin, which is influenced by the last empire in China- the Chin dynasty.

Each time when I visit the North East china, familiar language touched the feeling of travel, I think the language impacting people’s life and character much, so it might explain why I have visited there several times.

這次天氣很冷因此參加的人不多只有8個人,聽領隊黃永耀先生解釋是因為大部份人都參加不久前同樣氣溫下的”冬季壩上金山岭長城團”,因此再參加此團意願高的人就不多了。

 We had a small group of total 8 people this time, because of the harsh climate specially the frozen temperature which were around minus 20-30 degree Celsius.

首晚住宿哈爾濱,其間晚飯後顶著-20℃的低溫去拍哈爾濱地標攝蘇菲亞俄羅斯教堂,第二天一大早出發前往雪鄉,途中到橫道子河拍攝東北虎那是一處飼養東北虎的園區,我使用生態專用的鏡頭 Canon 200-400mm/f4 IS USM EXT ,由於鏡頭加機身超過6公斤手持拍攝有些困難須架在三腳架上,因此靈活性較差一般職業攝影大都使用gimbal雲台,它可抵銷相機重量幾乎到零,可靈活機動的跟拍迅速移動的禽或鳥等動物,由於天氣寒冷老虎似乎不太活動,拍攝中園方以丟出的獵物來吸引老虎跳越搶食,拍攝騰空的目標時應選擇乾淨背景才能使相機的連續對焦容易鎖定目標,如背景是樹林則容易使相機的自動對焦對到錯誤的目標。

We stayed in Harbin first evening, after dinner we went out for shooting the landmark of the city- the “Sofia Russian Church”, the itinerary started next morning to “China’s Snow Town” stopped by a tiger range for a photography shooting, I shoot with Canon 200-400mm/f4 IS USM EXT, because of the weight (appro.6kg total) I used a Gizmo tripod and G2180 fluid ball head, the better way for wild life shooting should be a gimbal head which balancing the weight of camera for fluent move, the tigers seemed sluggish by the severe weather, several chickens have thrown for tigers to seize for meal, for shooting a moving subjects when using “continuous auto focusing” mode the better way is choosing a clean background against a wrong targets focusing.

離開虎園晚上到達雪鄉,此地的雪號稱是中國最美的雪,雪質特殊雪白綿密,上次造訪是在2012,這次整個景觀已不復往昔,過往早期的農家院大都已拆除,來到大門口必須付費搭接駁專車進入鎮上,兩旁都是商販類似夜市,過去的農家房舍都改建為水泥的現代建築,僅僅短短3-4年間可見大陸當局對觀光的著力,吃過飯我們選了一處樣板農家院付費拍一些夜景,使用canon 16-35mm/f2.8超廣角鏡,由於光線低必須使用長時間曝光,三腳架和快門線是不可缺的器材,為使相機的震動減至最少,可使用相機的”自拍2秒”或”反射板上掀”功能,另設定最低ISO和低K值白平衡約3500,如有魚眼鏡也是不錯的嘗試。

In the evening we arrived the “China’s Snow Town”, here they are famed for its best quality of snow in China, the finest snow with elasity which will stick to the roof and not avalanching, but this time the whole prospective has been enormously changed, it is too modern like the night market in the city, most of the farm houses have become modern building compare to my last stop-over in 2012, the ancient mood of prospective have gone specially for photography, the booming tourists in China has been moved fast for commercial purpose in 3-4 years, in the evening we did some night shooting with a “model snow farm house”, I used  canon 16-35mm/f2.8 wide angle lens, in low light situation it needs tripod and shutter release to deal with long time exposure to avoid the camera vibration, using 2 seconds “self timer” or open “view find glass” can help to get more pop image of clarity, the lowest ISO setting also needed for sharp image, set the proper white balance according to the lighting on site, but all theses can be adjusted in the post-processing if shoot RAW, last but not least a fish-eye lens also would be a nice choice.

隔天,結束了雪鄉的停留往長白山的二道白河,行程安排至此並非要去長白山而是二道白河市的魔界拍攝景點,這個地方早期是由一些攝影人發現,是一片水塘及小溪形成的特殊景觀,在其周圍有許多枯枝怪木透露出一種詭譎魔幻的氣氛,與雪鄉類似在發展觀光的前題下也經過一番整理並收門票,即使如此它日出時的光影的確美不勝收。

Next day we were heading to a shooting site which was explored by some enthusiasm photographers in the early time called “ghost world”, which are a scattered ponds with ghostly weird shape forest surrounded, it is again the original looking has been changed to a tourist spot, but anyway in the damn, the lighting still being such an attractive.

繼續往下一站霧淞島由於雪地行車車速不快,過去幾天每到一處都須超過7-8個小時以上,體力的負荷不小,到達霧淞島天時已晚吃過晚餐大家都早早休息,以待明早的霧淞的日出景色,大家共同關心的問題是到底能遇到霧淞嗎?當地人七嘴八舌有的說有、有的說沒有,預測大自然的變化是困難的,近年來大陸大力發展觀光對週遭景色造成的改變,使先前的原有景色改觀,同時氣候暖化也形成極端的氣溫變化,如今霧淞島所在的松花江河水,與低氣溫接觸後產生的霧氣也與已往不同,果然一大早來到江邊過去濃濃白霧的江面景色已不復見,一層薄薄的霧氣往岸上飄散,與理想中霧淞的情景實有一段距離,此時只能拍些有霧的日出景色,領隊黃永耀先生為能確定可拍攝到霧淞景色特別安排在霧淞島多停留一天,然天公不作美,最後只能悵然的離開繼續行程。

One of the main interest this time is to shoot “fog hanging phenomenon”, which normally the breezing fog hanging on the branches displaying a white shining crystal branches, but there are conditions needed to meet this gorgeous view, it needs low temperature around minus 20℃ or lower, then a dry weather with breeze to move the fog to the branches, and of course it needs heavy fog, but this time in the typical photography site called “Wu Sonh” island, we missed the phenomenon even we stayed one more day but the luck was not on our side.

離開霧淞島繼續往東邊的向海,此處有許多”單頂鶴”棲息,趁著天沒亮攜帶拍攝鳥類的器材來到單頂鶴的園區,拍攝日出時單頂鶴遨翔天際的美景,使用的鏡頭仍是Canon 200-400mm/f4 IS USM EXT 並加1.4x加倍鏡增資焦距為560mm,相機設定採M(手動)模式,光圈為f/5.6到F/8由於早上光線仍暗須提高ISO約為1600,因為目標為快速移動的鳥類,快門應在1/1600s或更快1/2000s等視環境光線而定,曝光模式選擇”高速連拍”和”連續對焦”,此次由於攜帶的油壓雲台較小(Gitzo G2180 fluid head)無法靈活運用只能手持跟拍,拍攝鳥禽應採順光也就是光線來自後方,為能拍攝鳥類”起飛”或”著地”的影像,要尋找面對目標時順風的地點,因為鳥類一般是逆風起飛著路,但隨着太陽升起相機曝光應作調整,原則為縮小光圈如f/8或降低ISO值約800甚至400,如有興趣可參考Author Morris 的YouTube影片可了解更多的技巧。

We keep heading to the east as the itinerary been reached to its last part, the place called “Shan Hai” where we were going to shoot the “red dot head crane”, they normally inhabit in the northern east China, in dawn at the morning break, we started the shooting of the pretty flying crane, again using Canon 200-400mm/f4 IS USM EXT with 560mm focal length this time, set camera to manual mode、high ISO to 1600 and shutter speed as 1/1600s or 1/2000s depending on the lighting situation, set to continuous shutter and focusing, to get better lighting of the subject I need to find a location that the light is from back of my shoulder, normally the birds fly against the wind, to shoot the cranes’ flying cruise, again the wind should flow from the back of the shooter, as the sky getting brighter I should adjust the exposure by either close the f/stop or lowering the ISO, finally there is a YouTube clip by “Author Morris” provides more shooting technique on the bird photography.

最後一天到達此次行程的終點吉林,這是最後一次拍攝霧淞的機會,但延著松花江畔所謂的”霧淞長廊”僅有些許樹掛的景色,再一次的遺憾無法與霧淞相遇。

The last day the of the itinerary was back to the city of “Ji Lin,” the famous “Song Hwa “river is flowing through the city, there is a so-called “fog hanging phenomenon” corridor along the river under proper weather condition, but again the luck was not on our side.

攝影回顧:此次攝影是在約零下約20-30度之間因此有許多困難須克服:

  1. 由於曝露在低溫環境身體須保暖確實,手套、暖暖包不可缺少。
  2. 器材由於低溫產生結霜現象,應備包覆物如毛巾、相機套等以防電池消耗。
  3. 相機結霜不可立即擦拭,須待進入屋內待其解霜後再進行保養擦拭。
  4. 當追蹤快速移動的鳥類時,因使用”連續對焦”相機會不斷找尋對焦的目標,設定時應選擇鎖定主目標功能,同時避免有樹林或建築物的背景,以防相機持續的對焦中對到背景而非主体。

The photography review:  this trip was in the mid of the winter time, the temperature was very low normally in this area:

  1. You need to actually keep warm with proper clothing when exposed outside for shooting, the gloves and warm chemical hand bag etc. should have.
  2. The cameras will get frozen under the minus temperature, it’s better to have a towel wrap it when not shooting to against the battery drained out.
  3. If the camera frozen with ice, it should not be wiped right away until we move into the warmer temperature in the room.
  4. When shoot the quick moving subject like birds, the continuous focusing of the camera will keep tracing the subject, so it should set “the priority of tracing main subject” and avoid the complicate background such as trees、buildings etc. for against the camera is tracing the wrong subjects.
